Dorothea glanced up at her and then away. That had been 13 years ago. The story her father told her was that Mr. Harvest took his own life as a lot of successful stockbrokers had in the wake of the market crash of ’29. He’d made it look accidental by driving off the road and over an embankment. But in a private note he’d left for Mrs. Harvest to find afterward, he explained he’d staged it so that his life insurance wouldn’t be nullified. Along with the suicide note was the key to his private safe — private even from her— which included the life insurance policies and a substantial amount of cash.

So sad to have lost hope to that extent. I guess a silver lining is that he was thinking of his wife's welfare at the same time.
